Nelson, located at the top northwest corner of New Zealand's South Island, has become not only a wine-lover's destination but an arts and cultural capital as well. The warm climate and laid-back attitude has drawn a unique group of artists who work in a variety of mediums. The World of Wearable Art & Classic Cars Museum is a landmark like no other. Suzie Moncrieff's internationally-known Montana World of Wearable Art Awards Show got its start in Nelson in 1987. Pick up a Nelson Art Guide and visit a few artists while you're in town. You won't find any specific gay bars or real scenes in Nelson (fortunately there are gay mens and womens groups for the locals and visitors) but it's a great place to take a break from life, drink some good wine, head out to the Abel Tasman Park to unwind, and enjoy the breathtaking surroundings Nelson effortlessly provides.
